Back Home
My love for plants began in my youth. As a farmer’s daughter, I spent a lot of time in the fields, learning to differentiate rice varieties by their husks and grains, identifying nutrient deficiencies, and knowing when the crops were ready for harvest. We grew vegetables not just for our family, but for our neighbours too. My interest soon expanded to ornamental and flowering plants, all for the sake of a hobby. After watching Karate Kid, my curiosity for bonsai began, and as they say… the rest is history.
NZ Journey
When I first came to New Zealand in 2006, the first thing I did was join the Avon Bonsai Club to familiarise myself with the local tree species. My weekend walks were always educational and productive, helping me build my hobby. Frequent trips to plant nurseries soon followed as my collection of materials grew. Being an accountant by profession has its stressful moments, and working on a tree became a real stress buster.
When I ran out of space in my small garden, a friend suggested selling some of my bonsai trees. But the more I sold, the more I created! That’s when I got a stall at the Sunday Riccarton Market and started participating in other markets, fairs, fêtes, and shows. These events give me the chance to spread the art of bonsai and share my love of plants with others.
I am at Present
Now that my corporate job is behind me, I have the chance to do what I love most: being in the garden 24/7. This means more time for propagation, repotting, weeding, styling, and more! My bonsai trees are now permanent fixtures at West Melton Plant Nursery, alongside my various succulents and cacti. In the next few months, we will be offering sessions on bonsai as well as cacti grafting, so please stay tuned or message us.
That’s me for now…
Myra
